Care Quality Commission (CQC) Registration – for your peace of mind

Are you looking for at-home care for yourself or for a relative? It may seem like there are a bewildering choice of different types of care, as well as a plethora of different providers to choose from.

For such an important decision, it can be difficult to work out how to find a good care-provider that is suitably skilled and qualified and will provide effective and compassionate care.

CQC registered providers

One of the easiest ways to pick a reputable care provider is to ensure that they are CQC registered – this provides added reassurance from an independent third party body.

Who are the CQC?

CQC stands for ‘Care Quality Commission’. The CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care in England.

A description from the CQC web site says:

‘We monitor, inspect and regulate services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety and we publish what we find, including performance ratings to help people choose care.’

The CQC has established a list of fundamental standards of care which all carers must follow.  It also asks a number of key questions of providers when it is registering and inspecting them and these questions are:

  • Are they safe?
  • Are they effective?
  • Are they caring?
  • Are they responsive to people’s needs?
  • Are they well led?

In order for the CQC to register a provider – they must be reassured that it meets these criteria. This involves a lengthy application process and evidence of ongoing commitment to high quality care. In order to register with the CQC, a care provider must assess and monitor its own services, ensure good health and safety practices and keep accurate records of service users, as well as ask them for regular feedback. The provider also needs to be managed by a CQC registered manager.

The CQC also carries out unannounced inspections of organisations that are registered with it, so providers are subject to an inspection at any time to ensure that they meet the exacting standards of the CQC.
